The Golden Compass has been my greatest challenge to date. The highlight for me was directing the voices of the children, Freddie Highmore and Dakota Blue Richards, at The Bridge studio in London. Back in the USA we had 6-months to deliver the sound, music, and voices for a 6-platform title… and the audio engine was, shall we say, antiquated. The audio engine code was so frustrating to look at it actually promted the resignation of its assigned programmer, who soon after got a profane tattoo blasting the tool's name - and leaving the audio team with no technical support… In the end, we shipped on-time and with decent quality (after 63 very long days without a break) and the music produced with Jamie Christopherson (at the last minute, after our original composer backed out) received G.A.N.G. award nominations for "Best Instrumental" and "Music of the Year". Confession: we faked all stereo sounds because the engine would only play back mono… good times!
